History of Yonkers, NY
In the area of New York known today as Yonkers, the original settlers of the region were members of several Native American tribes including the Algonquin, the Mohegan, and the Manhattes tribe. These tribes had established villages and holdings mainly along the banks of the intersection of- what is presently known as- the Saw Mill River and Hudson River. After the discovery of this land by English voyager Henry Hudson in 1609, a fur trade route was established along this passage between the Native Americans that were local to this area and the Dutch West India Company. While under Dutch rule, Adrian van der Donck was made privy to a land grant by the Dutch West India Company, which gifted him the Colony of Nepperhan an area that- at the time- held what is today known as the city of Yonkers, NY. This land was given to Van der Donck in 1646 and he quickly established what would end up being one of the first saw mills in the New World along the banks of what was at the time referred to as the “De Zaag Kill,” but was later renamed Saw Mill River- it is from Van der Donck’s surname that the name “Yonkers” is derived.

Originally regarded as a smaller farming community in the 1700s, the location of Yonkers quickly skyrocketed it into an essential location and sent the local economy soaring. Yonkers served as a popular resting spot for many travelers both by land and sea and businesses ranging from mills to shops and taverns swiftly began to develop as local real estate growth took off. This time of immense economic development continued on until after the Revolutionary War when when the British supporters that had been holding claim to the area lost power and the land was then redivided under New York State Law and sold off. The entirety of the state of New York was divided into 16 individual counties and the city of Yonkers- along with its portion of the Hudson River - became one of 16 towns officially held within Westchester County in 1790.

Throughout history, Yonkers has been the origin of many notable “firsts,” in fact, on June 1, 1872, Governor Hoffman signed the charter that established Yonkers as the first true city in Westchester County. Following this development Yonkers became the first city in the county to have street lighting and also the home to the first daily newspaper published in Westchester County, The Yonkers Herald. As of 2020, Yonkers, NY is awarded the title of the fourth largest city in New York- being home to a population of over 198 thousand people in just over 18 square miles. The town is typically regarded as a democratic stronghold like much of the rest of the state of New York and is ranked nationally as the fourth safest city of its size in the country.
